SCCC APS Building
Heating System

Department of Corrections
Seward, Alaska
October 2023

Project Summary

Challenge

The facility’s heating system needed critical maintenance, including draining, flushing, and component replacement, to prevent leaks and ensure efficiency before the harsh Alaskan winter set in.

Our Approach

Our team executed a full system drain and flush, replaced leaking couplings, fittings, and pipes, and upgraded insulation and auto air vents. The system was then refilled with a 50% propylene glycol mixture to ensure long-term reliability.

Project Highlights:
  • Successfully completed within the September–November timeframe, including change orders.
  • Navigated logistical challenges, securing accommodations during peak fishing season.
  • Fast-tracked project completion to restore heating before freezing temperatures arrived.
  • Managed restricted access with full-time facility escorts, ensuring workflow efficiency.
  • Led by a new field employee who delivered exceptional results through strong communication.
